Do self-help books really work?
My answer:-
It largely depends on the person who’s reading the book.
The transformation I have witnessed in myself is solely because of reading and following self-help and personal development books.
Few of my friends who read a couple of books that I was reading in the same month showed no significant changes in their personality. They were exactly the same as they were before.
If there are no changes in you after reading the book, then you’ve wasted your time and energy.
Just reading is not going to help you. There are people who have read Think and Grow Rich (the blockbuster personal development book to get rich and successful) but not even once they followed what Napoleon Hill was asking them to. From jumping to the chapter he asked, to writing those goals down. No action was taken.
The author can only tell you what can be done in order to fulfill your dreams but it completely depends on how you imply that in your life.
Personally, self-help books are a great way to know about ourselves and improve in any specific area we desire to become better in.
I see the following changes in me after reading
- Rich Dad Poor Dad : I cut down on shopping (I love clothes) and started planning to invest my money. I also, stopped thinking about owing things but focus only on on creating assets. I became less materialistic to have a lifestyle that I want in the coming future.
- 7 habits of highly effective people: It changed my paradigm. I stopped controlling other people, because everything I assume about others was only in my mind. This one principle from the book has done wonders for my relationships with people.
- The Secret: We become what we think. And I can’t deny this lesson from the book even after 3 years of reading it. I owe my optimism to The Secret. It has turned the course of my life.
- The Power of your Subconscious Mind: I stopped belittling myself. I used to think that I am not capable of extraordinary things but oh boy was I wrong! Everything that decides the quality of your life is that thing between your ears. It’s more powerful than you know.
- The magic of Thinking Big: I used to think a hundred times before asking for even the bare minimum. This book has given me an opportunity to always think/ask for things bigger than your expectations.
The point is I can add ten more books here and write down how I have taken leverage from all of them. But how is it going to help you?
If you’re reading this answer just like how you read those books, it’s not going to change anything.
You gotta take action.
Action is the key.
Go.
